(Answer each question by choosing the best option)
English speaking people have never been really homogeneous in their use of the English language. Today, if you travel extensively in the British Isles, you notice differences in pronunciation and vocabulary from shire to shire, or even if your ear is good enough, from town to town. In London alone you can find tremendous diversity in the varieties of English. In the United States, likewise, the language differs somewhat from place to place and from one social “class” to another. Many New Yorkers don’t pronounce words as Chicagoans do, and in Denver people don’t sound like those in Chicago. In some parts of the Southwest, Spanish influence shows up in the vocabulary; elsewhere, Germans and others have affected the English language.

Question 101 of 125
101. Question
Poetry is not prose; nor is it music or philosophy or criticism. And yet it frequently steals its way into each of these varied fields of creativity. There is something in the nature of poetry which can tempt you to believe that poetry is at once everything and nothing. This ambiguity is surely one of the things that constitute the element of mystery which is always there at the heart of all great poetry. However, the same ambiguity and the same elusiveness may, through progressive degeneration, well have contributed to the intolerable difficulty and obscurity of much modern poetry. The blind Honer sang his poems, an his unlettered audience heard them spellbound, not only following what his poems were telling them, but also applauding their exquisite beauty. The poet of our time do not sing their poems to their audience- they cannot be expected to. But does that justify their speaking in an esoteric language which only they themselves and a few others of their tribe understand? We welcome change, for change is a sign of growth. Unfortunately, this has not been so for poetry in our time. Instead of growing, it has shrunk- into a narrow space and a narrower isolation. How one longs to go back to days of Homer!
The word “elusiveness” means-
