Undergraduate degree programs

An undergraduate degree program is a study program that leads to the student’s first degree or diploma for higher education. This category includes Bachelor’s degree programs, but also programs toward the state exam (Staatsexamen), Diplom or Magister degrees. Master’s degree programs, by contrast, are always graduate programs, which means that admission always requires that the student has successfully completed an undergraduate program first. In Germany, agreements laid out by the Conference of Education and Cultural Affairs (Kultusministerkonferenz) state that undergraduate programs that lead directly to a master’s degree are not permitted.

Graduate degree programs

The master’s degree is an academic degree that university graduates earn upon completion of a second academic program. A Master’s degree program lasts two to four semesters and builds upon an undergraduate program. Students who wish to enroll in a master’s degree program are required to have a bachelor’s degree or other degree or diploma from one of the single-stage academic programs traditional in the German system (Magister, Diplom, first state exam (Staatsexamen) in law or teaching credential (Lehramt) program; degree in medicine).

Depending on the area of focus, a master’s degree program can allow the student to explore the subject previously studied in greater depth or to branch out into new areas of knowledge. A doctoral program (Promotion) leads to the academic degree of doctor (Doktorat) in a specific discipline. This degree is considered proof of the student’s aptitude to work scientifically or academically at an advanced level. It is based on an independent academic work – the dissertation – and an oral exam.

Doctorate at Freie Universität Berlin

Very attractive for international students: along with the University of Heidelberg, Freie Universität Berlin is the preferred address in Germany for doctoral candidates from abroad. Source: Peter Himsel

As one of nine Germany’s leading universities Freie Universität Berlin offers high quality doctoral education. In the Excellence Initiative competition Freie Universität was awarded additional funding for its outstanding graduate programs to promote young researchers.

Individual Doctorate

The individual doctorate (“Apprenticeship Model”) – independent research under supervision of a professor – is still the most common way to pursue a doctorate in Germany. This usually provides greater freedom as far as the choice of subject is concerned. An individual doctorate can principally be accomplished in any subject area represented by a professorship at Freie Universität Berlin. Requirement for acceptance as a doctoral candidate is generally a very good final degree. Individual doctoral students do not automatically take part in a qualification program.

Doctoral Degree Programs

Pursuing doctoral studies in a doctoral degree program, doctoral candidates come together to work on projects related to a common interdisciplinary research topic. During the course of their doctorate junior researchers in obtaining a broad set of skills  to enhance their personal, professional and career development.

Doctoral Education at Dahlem Research School (DRS)

Outstanding doctoral degree programs are comprised under the umbrella of Dahlem Research School. Doctoral candidates of DRS-member programs benefit from an interdisciplinary course program in which transferable skills applicable to a range of future careers in academia and beyond can be acquired. The Welcome Infos & Services Site for international junior researchers provides useful advice and information on all non-academic issues relevant to a research stay in Berlin. Newly admitted doctoral candidates are invited to attend DRS Orientation Weeks in September.

Higher education admissions for those with professional qualifications

Prospective applicants who are interested in commencing an academic program without first having earned higher education entrance qualifications (Abitur), but hold professional qualifications, may be eligible to apply to study at Freie Universität Berlin if certain prerequisites are met (see below). This option is open especially to prospective applicants who have longer periods of professional experience and wish to deepen and expand their knowledge in their field.

Applications for academic programs included in the process operated by the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (hochschulstart) – currently pharmacy and veterinary medicine – are not possible, at present, by way of § 11 of the Higher Education Act for the State of Berlin (Berliner Hochschulgesetz, BerlHG).

Groups of applicants with professional qualifications

Those with professional qualifications fall within several groups.

Group 1

In Berlin, the most recent reform of the Higher Education Act for the State of Berlin (Berliner Hochschulgesetz, BerlHG) states that those with professional qualifications are considered to have earned general higher education entrance qualifications (allgemeine Hochschulzugangsberechtigung) if the following prerequisites are met:

  •     You have passed an advanced continuing or professional education program (Aufstiegsfortbildung) pursuant to the provisions of the Crafts and Trades Act (Handwerksordnung), the Vocational Training Act (Berufsbildungsgesetz), or comparable German federal or state laws or regulations (examples include programs to earn the titles of Industriemeister, Gestalter, Techniker, Fachwirt, Fachkaufmann, Betriebswirt, or Meister)
  •     You have completed a vocational school program at a government-operated or government-accredited vocational school (Fachschule) within the meaning of § 34 of the Education Act for the State of Berlin (Berliner Schulgesetz) or have completed a comparable education program in an-other state in Germany.
  •     You have earned qualifications comparable to the abovementioned advanced continuing or professional education program (Aufstiegsfortbildung) within the meaning of the Seafarers’ Act (Seemannsgesetz).
  •     You have earned qualifications comparable to the abovementioned advanced continuing or professional education program (Aufstiegsfortbildung) based on continuing or professional education governed by state law or regulations for healthcare professions or in the fields of social care, social services, or education.

Candidates who demonstrate that they have completed vocational training abroad in accordance with the points described for Group 1 are also considered to have higher education entrance qualifications. Substantial information on recognition procedures for foreign degrees, please consult the following web portals:

  •     Department for recognition of foreign degrees (ZAB)
  •     berufliche Anerkennung
  •     anerkennung-in-deutschland
  •     netzwerk-iq

Group 2

Those with professional qualifications are considered to have earned higher education entrance qualifications associated with a specific subject (fachgebundene Hochschulzugangsberechtigung) if the following prerequisites are met:

  •     You have completed a vocational training program regulated under German federal or state laws or regulations of not less than two years’ duration in a subject similar to that of the academic program for which you wish to apply, and
  •     You have worked for at least three years in the profession for which you were trained.

Applicants, who cannot clearly assign themselves to group 2 or 3, have the opportunity to consult the Student Records and Registration Office. Please contact us no later than June 6, 2013.

Candidates who demonstrate that they have completed vocational training abroad in accordance with the points described for Group 2 are also considered to have higher education entrance qualifications. Substantial Information on recognition procedures for foreign degrees, please consult the following web portals:

  •     Department for recognition of foreign degrees (ZAB)
  •     berufliche Anerkennung
  •     anerkennung-in-deutschland
  •     netzwerk-iq

In the case of recipients of scholarships under the German federal government’s Advanced Scholarship Program (Aufstiegsstipendienprogramm), two years of professional experience is sufficient.

The minimum amount of professional experience is higher for part-time employees.

Periods of maternity leave (Mutterschutz), parental leave (Elternzeit) or leave to care for a family member (Pflegezeit) are offset up to a maximum of one year.

Group 3

If you have higher education entrance qualifications associated with a specific subject (fachgebundene Hochschulzugangsberechtigung), but cannot demonstrate any relation between that subject and your chosen academic program, you can still apply (see prerequisites for professional qualifications of Group 2). In such cases, an obligatory entrance exam has to be passed. Please note the specific requirements for an application below.

Please consult the Student Records and Registration Office personally within the office hours to examine your documents until June 11, 2013. Bring with you your complete application documents, please. In case the examination of your documents is successful, you will receive an invitation for the entrance exam, immediately.

To complete your application, you will get the opportunity to fill out the online application form within this date. After completing the application, it is possible to keep informed on the current status of your application and your exam results via our applicant information service.

The entrance exam will take place on June 13 and 14, 2013 for the winter semester 2013/2014 before the application deadline (July 15, 2013). The invitation will contain information on the precise location. The exam results will be expected on July 4, 2013.

The entrance exam is held only one time in advance of the admission procedure of the winter semester. There is no make-up or alternative date for this exam. As a consequence, applicants of group 3 cannot apply for summer semesters. Candidates may be permitted to repeat it, or to re-register for the entrance exam the next year; a new application is required. You will have the opportunity to prepare for this entrance exam beforehand. For information on the examination subjects according to the chosen academic program for those with professional qualifications, please see the table below.

You can visit the website of the Studienkolleg preparatory program to see sample exams. Regular consultations are offered by the Studienkolleg beginning January 28, 2013 for general information and advising concerning  individual examination subjects.

Candidates who demonstrate that they have completed vocational training abroad in accordance with the points described for Group 2 are also considered to have higher education entrance qualifications.

Group 4

Candidates who have successfully been enrolled in higher education in a different state in Germany for at least one year based on professional qualifications are permitted to apply for a study placement in the next higher subject-specific semester (Fachsemester) in the same academic program or an academic program whose content is largely the same. You apply to the appropriate departments for recognition of equivalency of the academic program and placement within the appropriate subject-specific semester after receiving an admissions notice. Candidates who have studied abroad based on their professional qualifications are required to apply for the first subject-specific semester, provided that the criteria are met (general higher education entrance qualifications or higher education entrance qualifications associated with a specific subject).

The application process

For programs with limited admissions (impacted programs), please apply online between June 1 and July 15, 2013 (winter semester deadline, exclusion period)!
