Arizona State University is one of the premier metropolitan public research universities in the nation. ASU is research-driven but focused on learning. Teaching is carried out in a context that encourages the creation of new knowledge. ASU maintains a tradition of academic excellence in core disciplines, and has become an important global center for innovative interdisciplinary teaching and research.

ASU is one university in many places. In addition to the historic Tempe campus, a college town in the midst of a dynamic metropolitan region, the university comprises two newer campuses: ASU at the West campus, in northwest Phoenix adjacent to Glendale, and ASU at the Polytechnic campus, in Mesa. Additionally, ASU is conceptualizing and designing a fourth campus to be located in downtown Phoenix. ASU at the Downtown Phoenix campus is part of a larger plan to revitalize and redevelop the city’s urban core. ASU envisions the downtown Phoenix campus to serve 10,000 to 15,000 students with an active 24/7 environment that includes academics, housing, retail, and cultural programs and entertainment.

ASU seeks to provide the best possible education to the broadest possible spectrum of society, embracing the educational needs of the entire population. By the year 2020, ASU is projected to enrol 90,000 students. The university champions diversity, and is international in scope, welcoming students from all 50 states and nations across the globe. ASU is an active partner with the private sector in initiatives to enhance the social well-being, economic competitiveness, cultural depth, and quality of life of metropolitan Phoenix and the state.

Benefits of arts and sciences degree

Employers most often seek the skills provided in an arts and sciences degree: a well-rounded perspective, the ability to communicate effectively and critical thinking skills. In fact, the number of Fortune 500 CEOs with a degree in the liberal arts is the same as those with a degree in business administration.

Degrees

Whether you practice music, architecture, dance, theatre, design, visual art or film, creative excellence requires both a mastery of your discipline and the development of your own creative expression. At ASU’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, excellence and innovation unite and thrive within six schools, each devoted to its own creative discipline.

The Herberger Institute offers more than 45 undergraduate degrees and concentrations and more than 70 graduate degrees and concentrations in our six schools Art, Arts, Media and Engineering, Dance, Design, Music and Theatre and Film.

Our cross-institute programs offer students an opportunity for cross-disciplinary study. For students interested in a program that combines studies within design or all the arts, see the bachelor of arts in design studies or the bachelor of arts in the arts degree. For graduate students interested in an individualized institute-wide interdisciplinary degree that integrates graduate courses and faculty research expertise, see the doctor of philosophy in design, environment and the arts. Our distinguished research unit, the ASU Art Museum, supplements our academic areas.

The institute provides a combination of traditional and contemporary coursework as a strong academic base. This core structure is complemented by well-equipped performance facilities, professional opportunities and technologically driven curricula with an interdisciplinary focus. Our internationally recognized faculty encourage collaboration that transcends boundaries and gives students a multitude of opportunities to shine.
